Hello
I am coming west to visit on March 10th. Is there a planned dive on the 13th? My daughter is certified as well and in grad school in L.A. maybe a good idea to meet memebers of the club
Want to dive on Sat. please let me know

Hi Rich,

Our dives are a bit less formal, but typically there are some of us that meet at Veteran's Park in Redondo Beach on Saturday mornings (@8am). We usually meet in the parking lot at corner of Harbor Dr. and Esplanade - you can check it out using Google Maps if you wish (bring quarters for the meters). It's not the most exciting dive spot in the world, but here's a bit of background on it:

http://www.cadivingnews.com/divespots/258/Redondo-Submarine-Canyon

The dives are typically dependent upon surf and beach conditions:

The two closest dive shops are "Dive N Surf" and "Sea d' Sea" - they are a short distance from the site and you can check them out online if you want.

If your schedule allows, there's also a group of us that dive a site called Old Marineland / Terranea on Sunday mornings @8am. That site is only about 15 mins. further south of Veterans Park, but has drastically different underwater topography. Here's some background on it:

But I'm sure Dan and/or some of the more experienced folks will post here as the week goes on, but at least that's some background info. Hope to see you!

Rich, welcome aboard.  To supplement what 'the other' Chris posted, Vet's Park is a good basic dive.  Simple entry/exit and the walk from the parking lot to the water is very short.  With the sub canyon, you can go as deep as you could ever want to go.  You're mostly diving sand as there's not a lot of structure, but if you want a basic dive just to wet the gills, it's a good spot.  You'll usually see some small horn sharks, sheep crabs, and hermit crabs.

Old Marineland is by far a better dive.  The amount of wildlife is impressive with everything from sheephead, garibaldi, bat rays, and all matter of nudibranchs and anenomies.  It's my favorite spot on PV.  But you have to earn it.  The entry/exit is rocky and in heavy surf best avoided.  There's also lots of kelp which can spook people that have never been in kelp before.  And it's a bit of a hike from the parking lot to the water.  This site is best avoided by newly minted divers or those that get winded walking from their house to their car in the morning.

Rich, I agree with Chris, OML is a nicer dive but you should probably pick Veteran's park to dive. We are there Wed nights and Saturday mornings.

Malaga Cove is a nice dive when the water is clear.

That place is such a hit and miss. I wish it was clear there more often.

Since there is a lobster boat on Friday night, is anyone planning on diving Vet's Saturday morning?

Just don't want Rich to have a "first experience" similar to mine.
Dan remembers it...

When I lugged my gear from Detroit and he stood me up - leaving me stranded in the parking lot with Lars.

So is anyone diving Vet's on Saturday?

And really, which is worse, Detroit, or hanging out with Lars?

I'll show up Chris if you want to buddy up?

I'm on the boat tonight and I have to drive to Monterey in the morning so I won't be able to make the dive.

Yes, I'll bring my gear to Vet's tomorrow, I'll likely be there @ 8am...
My larger concern was Rich showing up from NJ and not having anyone to dive with...

So if he shows up, maybe we can poke around the canyon as a group...
If he doesn't show, we can do the same as a buddy pair (conditions allowing)...

See you tomorrow morning!

TO RICH: If you come, I'll be the one wearing the Philly Eagles baseball hat...

Met up w/ TwinDuct, Dominic and Drysuit Greg this morning @ Vet's - turns out, Rich was a "no show".  Sad

Since he didn't show, we watched a class fight the surf for a little bit and then decided to bide our time and see how Marineland looks tomorrow...
